Alanus de Insulis (1128 - 1203)

Alanus de Insulis, also known as Alan of Lille, was a distinguished medieval scholar, theologian, philosopher and alchemist who represents one of the last of the old school of philosophy based on the patristic doctrines of the Church and a herald of the new philosophy of the following century. He pursued an extensive education at the Cathedral School of Chartes in Paris, where he learned the classics, Neo-Platonic thought, and thinkers like Augustine of Hippo and Boethius. Alanus was one of the Middle Age scholars who wanted to harmonize classical wisdom with Christian theology which influenced for example Dante, thereby leaving a lasting legacy in medieval philosophy, theology, and the development of Scholastic thought.

Next to his more famous Christian works, like the Summa de arte praedicatoria, a renowned work on charismatic preaching and rhetoric, and Regulae caelestis iuris, which explored divine law’s ethical and theological aspects; he also worked with alchemical texts and commenting on them as for example on the alchemical texts of Bernhardus Trevisanus in Bericht von der hermetischen Philosophia Dicta Alani (Report from the Hermetic Philosophia, dictated by Alani), which can be found in physical form at the Embassy of the Free mind library and here in the first link.
