Johannes Swammerdam (1637-1680)

Swammerdam was a Dutch biologist and microscopist. He was the first to show that insects did not generate from dirt or mud and described how eggs, larva, puppa and adult were different forms of the same animal.

Swammerdam suffered a crisis of conscience and became a follower of Antoinette Bourignon for some years. His main work Bybel der natuure was published posthumously in 1737 by Herman Boerhaave.
